THE EDIBLE WOMAN

Earphones Award Winner

by | Read by Lorelei King

Fiction • 9.5 hrs. • Unabridged • ©

Although first published in 1964, Atwood’s debut, and quite possibly best, novel feels wholly contemporary, in large part due to Lorelei King’s expert presentation. The prolific King, who narrates most of Janet Evanovich’s novels, understands the role of the voice in creating not just an emotional background, but a physical landscape as well. And the scenery is crucial here. Twenty-something Marian feels trapped by her job in market research (ultimate consumerism), by the apartment she shares with a ditzy and irresponsible woman, and, most of all, by her forthcoming marriage. This forty-year-old protofeminist novel will engage those interested in the feminist literary canon—but its contemporary voice and story just may appeal to today’s chick-lit audience, as well. R.R.
