Talking with Mike Chamberlain

When he narrates works of nonfiction, Mike Chamberlain feels that his most important job is to keep listeners interested and engaged--no matter how detailed or esoteric the subject matter. “My favorite thing is to try to breathe a lot of life into it, to bring as much energy and vibrancy to the material as I can and really make the book come alive.”

Chamberlain happened upon his narrating career when he moved to Los Angeles to pursue professional acting and landed a job with a commute. “The first book I picked up was PLUM ISLAND by Nelson DeMille, read by Scott Brick. And I just couldn’t get the smile off my face--it had so much energy. It just captured me, and it was so exciting to listen to it. It lit this spark in me.” Seven years later, he’s narrating high-profile audiobooks such as election wunderkind Nate Silver’s THE SIGNAL AND THE NOISE.

In December, Chamberlain completed another political title--THE END OF THE LINE, the last of four installments in the POLITICO Playbook 2012 series, which followed the election from the primaries through election night.

“I felt like I was getting insider information that nobody else knew, and I was getting it first! It answered a lot of questions for me about how the election went.” Just another perk of the job.--Jennifer M. Dowell
