SUNWING

At first blush, a series about bats may not grab you, but this story about a young silver wing bat called Shade, who sets out to find his missing father, is much more than a story about bats. Shade sets in motion a chain of events that threatens his family and friends and confronts head-on issues related to the human domination of nature and warfare. Any misgivings will be set aside early as John McDonough brings the skill of a master storyteller to this tale. His engagement with the story is contagious. He makes good use of timing to keep the adventure moving forward with no hesitation. His characterizations are rich and nuanced, and his narration weaves a net that will hold you until the very end.
