Listeners are in for an extravagant treat with this production. Sean Barrett's skilled narration is enhanced by realistic sound effects—from squeaking doors to big-band sounds reminiscent of old-time radio. Barrett captures German-Jewish violinist Elisa Lindham's growing despair with compelling intensity as German forces sweep into her beloved city of Vienna before WWII. Shouts of "Heil, Hitler!," stomping boots, and Hitler's proclamations give authenticity. The despair of Jewish refugees forced into railroad cars for eventual medical experimentation or death in the gas chambers is hauntingly realistic. Barrett depicts Elisa's courageous actions to help Jews escape, particularly two little boys. Barrett's versatile range and skill will not disappoint as he creates the sense of multiple narrators in his portrayal of Germans, Jews, and others of both genders in a gripping story.
