Miss Loupe is an upbeat, creative teacher at a run-down school on a North Carolina military base, where students and staff deal with ordinary life and with the effects of war every day. Just as Miss Loupe hooks her sixth-grade students on the joys of learning, Jessica Almasy engages listeners with her depiction of Miss Loupe’s enthusiastic personality. Almasy deftly portrays the students as well, in particular the high-spirited Bo Whaley, who has trouble focusing until Miss Loupe introduces imaginative learning. In contrast, Almasy expresses his cousin Gari’s reticence and feelings of isolation when her mother is deployed. The drama increases when Miss Loupe’s own brother goes missing in Afghanistan, and, at the same time, she beings to question the effectiveness of her teaching. When her students adopt their devoted teacher’s “YES!” approach to life, they show that the heart can transcend the challenges of war. S.W.
