Narrator Derek Perkins sets a strong pace in the first of Wells's Seven Isles series. Listeners venture into a world in which the Reishi are on the rise and Alexander Valentine may be all that stands in the way of their filling the world with darkness. The Thinblade sword is a symbol of the king of Ruatha, and to prove he's the rightful heir, Valentine must recover it. Perkins's delivery reflects the sense of urgency Alexander and his companions feel in their search. His portrayal of Valentine shows the hero's growth from a naïve young man to a more mature man who understands his authority and the responsibility that attends it. In his skillful presentation of Valentine's companions, their unique personalities shine, as does their support and deference to their leader.
