Listeners will be amused as Bartholomew encounters good-natured ribbing when his former fiancée and her husband visit. As portrayed by Thorpe, the protagonists' boisterously enjoy traditional Christmastime misrule. The elderly and infirm are convincing while Thorpe's expressions of raw emotion at sudden death are palpable. Sharp-tongued Agatha, the laundress who fears no man--or criminal--adds much-needed levity.
