In a step back into Jack Reacher’s past--it’s 1989, and the Berlin Wall has fallen. Reacher, then a young MP, investigates the murders of a two-star general, his wife, and a Delta Force officer who might be gay. When Reacher’s new commanding officer orders him to quit the investigation, he disobeys and uncovers a military cabal and the mystery behind the brutal murders. Dick Hill’s narration heightens Lee Child’s gift for intricate plotting and sharply defined characters. Hill performs Reacher’s clipped, precise diction with a dark, utterly believable ferocity. Listeners know Reacher can overcome three MPs and steal their car. Hill does a fine job with female characters, too.
