Barrie Kealoha delivers an absorbing performance of Anne Berest's stunning autobiographical novel exploring her family's tragic yet resilient heritage. It begins in 2003 with the delivery of a postcard to the Berests' Paris home bearing the names of four relatives who died in Auschwitz. Fifteen years later, Anne decides to investigate the family's fate, including their flight from Russia after WWI and journeys to Latvia, Palestine, and Paris. Kealoha delivers the powerful result with admirable clarity and excellent pacing that fully draw in the listener without overdramatizing. Her pronunciation of French is more careful than fluent, but it's always correct. And while characters sometimes sound alike, Kealoha creates informative audio portraits of the most important personalities that engage us fully in their destiny.
