A STAR CALLED HENRY

Roddy Doyle's new work covers the first twenty years in the life of Henry Smart, born and raised in abject poverty in the slums of Dublin. On his own by age 8, he is a full-fledged revolutionary by age 13, a combatant in the Easter Rebellion of 1919, and a self-commissioned "captain" in the IRA at age 15. Narrator Gerard Doyle has a lovely Irish voice (in both speech and song) and makes the listener feel totally embedded in the Ireland of the early twentieth century. He manages the voice of the city and the countryside, the educated and the illiterate, the young and the old, the men and the women with confident mastery. This is an outstanding narration. R.E.K.
