My Roundup today looks at our Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror list and also the Nonfiction & Culture list. My immediate take is all the contrast! Will the same reader who settles in for a comforting listen with THE LITTLE BOOK OF HYGGE also choose to contemplate the intangible menace of GWENDY’S BUTTON BOX? Who knows, but I do love the variety of our choices.
There are three titles that will inspire writers and please word-lovers: John McPhee’s DRAFT NO. 4: On the Writing Process, LETTERS TO A YOUNG WRITER by Colum McCann, and Kory Stamper’s WORD BY WORD: The Secret Life of Dictionaries. I appreciate that each is delivered by the author and gives us a personalization of their advice. Coincidentally, author Joe Hill, whose audiobook STRANGE WEATHER is on the Sci-Fi list, recently shared some great advice about writing when we interviewed him with narrator Dennis Boutsikaris for The Download.
Our Best of the Year would not be complete without one of Neil Gaiman’s audiobooks. This year NORSE MYTHOLOGY is our go-to Neil listening. There’s something about these myths with their gods, giants & fantastic creatures that totally captivates. Neil’s mastery as a teller of tales is unparalleled, and this rich mythological world is a perfect vehicle. I was introduced to this realm of myths a few years ago with RAGNAROK by A.S. Byatt and can’t get enough. Once you’ve listened, you’ll understand!
