Broadway credits always make narrators appealing to listeners, and Boyd Gaines dazzles us with coveted awards three Tony awards and the recent success of "Journey's End." Even with his busy schedule that has included film and TV, Boyd makes time for audiobooks. "I call them my day job," he said when AudioFile spoke to him between rehearsals for "Pygmalion," opening this October on Broadway. "Audiobooks are part and parcel of my stage career in literature." They are part of the juggling act of an actor's life, and sometimes more arduous, he admits. Boyd's audiography includes more than 50 audiobooks since the 1990s, including a range of fiction—from early Tom Clancy and Larry McMurtry's PRETTY BOY FLOYD to recent thrillers by Jeffery Deaver, Hemingway's DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON, and Javier Sierra's LADY IN BLUE, celebrated with Earphones. Boyd has also recorded some fascinating nonfiction: Bob Woodward's three recent titles, PLAN OF ATTACK , THE SECRET MAN , and STATE OF DENIAL ; biographies of Neil Armstrong ( FIRST MAN ) and Benjamin Franklin; and a Wright Brothers history ( TO CONQUER THE AIR ). Born in Georgia, Boyd credits the oral tradition of the South for his early interest in storytelling and, as he said, "painting pictures with words."
