Here’s another British narrator who recorded his first audiobook with the American Foundation for the Blind and then found his way into mainstream audiobooks. We admire Steven’s ability to excel with different writing styles. He’s profoundly perceptive with literary works like Pat Barker’s WWI trilogy or Salman Rushdie’s works, yet able to breeze through with a light comedic touch for titles like Michael Frayn’s zany HEADLONG or the time-travel of TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG by Connie Wills. He handles the rigors of nonfiction with vivid realism, as shown in the Balkan conflicts of FRACTURE ZONE . Steven notes how the quality of the writing changes the job of the narrator. “In the better books the characters do speak with a different voice,” he says, and this allows the reader to follow the author’s lead and demands less vocal color. --2001 Narrator Yearbook
