Narrator Patricia Gallimore is matchless for this outstanding police procedural set in atmospheric Shrewsbury, England. Her depiction of the working--and hopefully romantic--relationship between Coroner Martha Gunn and Detective Inspector Alex Randall is spot-on. Drunken Tracy Walsh leaves home at 2 a.m. with her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy. When their mangled car is recovered, Tracy is dead, and Daisy is missing. Gallimore's portrayal of the investigation is particularly compelling. The police must carefully sift through many clues to find the truth because the remote Devil's Chair, where the accident occurred, is rife with superstition. A creepy witch-like person who "feeds" Gunn clues through the lore of flowers and herbs is Gallimore's best creation. Listeners will be eager to learn Daisy's fate.
