Personal discovery and the culture of work in America are the topics of this travelogue/memoir, narrated by L.J. Ganser with his usual consistency and genuine engagement. His flinty timbre and broad range of phrasing and tone make listening fun, though a younger-sounding narrator might have seemed more in sync with the coming-of-age aspect of this young author's book. Daniel Seddiqui says his cross-country journey was an effort to prove his employability and to experience the way people work across America. His gift for narrative creates an easy flow of reportage about how people work and how those jobs impact the people doing them. From rodeo announcer to meat packer to car-racing pit crew member, the author approached each job with a fine ear for its subtle requirements and each region's cultural assumptions.
