It’s delicious to visit with old friends, and that’s certainly the case in Lisette Lecat’s lovely performance of Alexander McCall Smith’s newest No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency mystery. South African-born Lecat, who has long narrated the series, understands the characters and atmosphere perfectly; thus, the listener can trust that all sounds as it should in the company of Botswana’s Mma Ramotswe and her compatriots. Though Mma is not quite as sprightly as she used to be—time does pass—she is as warm, wise, and insightful as ever when a Canadian woman asks for help finding a Botswana nursemaid not seen since childhood. Layers of mystery ensue, which Mma Precious Ramotswe and her associate, Mma Grace Makutsi, explore—and ultimately resolve, of course.
