Author Maile Meloy narrates her book with an easy confidence that comes from knowing the characters and plot firsthand. There's a wide cast of characters, many speaking Spanish, and Meloy's authentic pronunciation helps to create verisimilitude in the Central American setting. Her characterizations are subtle, allowing the listener to imagine the chaotic emotions that are triggered as the plot unfolds. The story is told from the viewpoints of both parents and children, with several different themes explored. A gripping and thought-provoking listen.
