Science journalist Caroline Williams visited neuroscientists to learn what works and doesn’t work to improve brain functioning. She narrates her information-packed discoveries quickly but with the clear articulation of a UK resident and the charm of someone who sounds open to the world. While listeners will have to focus to absorb the sheer amount of information she’s collected, her reading personality is paradoxically relaxing and the concepts surprisingly accessible. Among her many insights is the connection between digestive bacteria and various mental conditions relating to how easily our neural networks can rewire when offered new information or being asked to perform new tasks. Though the data and strategies to choose from are plentiful, the author’s chatty writing and vocal personality make this an attractive self-improvement resource.
