Narrator Robert Fass reads this audiobook with a straightforward informational approach. Cuba looms large to Americans because of its role in the last century of U.S. history. This audiobook provides listeners with a history of the nation that most Americans do not get in school. Using personal stories and historical research, the authors impart a great deal about the Cuban people and their struggle to establish an identity of their own. Fass is terrific with his Spanish pronunciations, and he paces himself so that we can understand every word. He doesn't have an elastic voice, nor does he portray emotion in his reading. He simply applies his deep pitch and authoritative tone to deliver the book's lessons. These are both the strengths and the limitations of his effort.
