Narrator Hillary Huber portrays Chicago cop Gina Simonetti in this work and home drama with a somber attitude that echoes her intense personality. Huber exudes empathy for Gina in scenes in which she must conceal a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis while searching for a perp who took her gun during a chase. Huber shines brightest in scenes in which she portrays the detective acting as a substitute mother to her drug-addicted brother. Schwegel is a master at creating characters with engaging backstories and life-altering problems. This heartbreaking story involves vulnerable people who are being abused by their caregivers. Huber's delivery matches those high stakes and faithfully portrays the tragic conclusions. R.O. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2017]
