In this prequel novel, James Langton tempers the urbane British tone of famed detective Charles Lenox with a hint of naïveté, achieved through a periodic quaver. In London in 1850, Lenox is 23 years old and fresh on the scent of his first case, aided by his friend and valet, Graham. The game's afoot when a letter by an anonymous writer claiming to have committed the perfect crime is published in a local tabloid. Soon a woman's body turns up in the Thames, and Lenox's personal and professional lives begin to intertwine. The rough bass Langton gives to Graham is a pleasing contrast to the sleuth's aristocratic tenor. Overall, Langton's accurate emotional inflections create an engaging listening experience.
