Nell, the first-person narrator telling this story, grew up in an isolated religious community in Appalachia. It may take some listeners a while to get past the twang of her accent and go with the story, but performer Khristine Hvam is to be congratulated for a remarkable job nailing and sustaining Nell's accent. She even delivers the subtle change in Nell's voice when she draws on her "church-speak" for effect. Although Nell dominates, the other characters are also well portrayed--Hvam's depiction of a Grindylow's chatter is nothing short of delightful. Fans of Faith Hunter's previous novels will welcome this extension of her fantasy series, but new listeners will also enjoy this exploring this world.
