This short collection of stories loosely based on familiar fairy tales like "The Little Mermaid" is set in a world the author calls the Grishaverse. Narrator Lauren Fortgang employs a leisurely pace reminiscent of traditional storytelling, drawing listeners into a dark world of cautious wonder. Fortgang embodies a variety of characters throughout the tales--a raspy Rat King; a deceptively innocent yet murderously sly Beauty; and a fierce and ambitious Prince, among others. Though listeners don't get to experience the print version's illustrations, the beautifully written tales are riveting through the audio experience. Fans of the Grishaverse will love these tantalizing bits of world building, but these tales can also be enjoyed completely on their own.
