Narrator Lucy Price-Lewis warmly introduces Geraldine Steel, a compassionate but determined London detective inspector. Businessman David Lester didn't have any enemies, yet he was murdered after bragging about carrying a valuable ring. Steel and her partner, Sam, effectively play good cop/bad cop as they question diverse suspects. Price-Lewis captures each character with realistic accents and slang. Hearing the cops' banter adds a strong sense of verisimilitude. Price-Lewis's best creation is Theo, a learning-disabled young man who's an unlikely suspect. Listeners are given a close look at the repetitive work that is involved with evaluating every clue one by one. It's poignant to hear Steel finally meet her birth mother when it's almost too late.
