Narrator David Thorpe takes listeners to Cambridge in 1353 as competing orders of the Church are warring--quite literally--over the metaphysical constructs of realism versus nominalism. Thorpe credibly portrays doctor Matthew Bartholomew as he investigates a series of murders related to a philosophical conflict that even its staunchest defenders little understand. The listener senses Bartholomew's increasing urgency as the murders grow in number and suspense heightens. As Bartholomew and Brother Michael uncover further intrigue at the convent of St. Radegund, which serves as a brothel of nuns, Thorpe increases the intensity of his tone and pacing to capture the urgency of this complex plot.
