Narrator Colleen MacMahon's vocal dexterity is showcased in this audiobook, which features a wide-ranging cast of immigrants living in the Midwest. She takes her time capturing the nuances of the various nationalities--from Indian to Arab. Her delivery includes believable male and female characters. MacMahon treats her characters well, taking her time to make distinctions between older and younger characters so we can keep track of who is speaking. Through her artful performance, Mr. Metha, an Indian shop owner, comes across as colorful, eccentric, and at times cringe worthy in his traditionalism. Listeners will chuckle as townspeople reconcile their passions and challenges. When the unsavory history of the town's name comes to light, they all work together to find a new one.
