With a topic like evil, this audiobook might have suffered from an overly dramatic narration, but Teri Schnaubelt's cool tone and direct delivery align well with Shaw's prose. Shaw examines modern ideas about evil and argues that it can be contextually defined. This does not necessarily mean that evil is culturally relative; rather, she explains how a blend of culture, neuroscience, and personal experience produces our conceptions of evil. Schnaubelt maintains a strong narrative clip, which is helped by good emphasis and clear, albeit generic, voices for quotes. Her pace also benefits from Shaw's straightforward prose. Ultimately, Schnaubelt's even delivery enhances the listener's experience of this thoughtful discussion. L.E. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2019]
