Jane Oppenheimer's narration of this contemporary paranormal mystery will keep you listening all night. After reaching out to a women's support sanctuary, Alice, who is running from an abusive relationship, and Oren, a 10-year-old boy, arrive in Delhi, New York, hoping for a safe haven. Mattie, a member of the sanctuary group, meets their bus in the midst of a snowstorm. Oren reminds Mattie of her brother, who died when he was 10, and, breaking with protocol, she lets the two stay with her for a night. Oppenheimer expertly handles the alternating chapters, clearly differentiating between 30-something Alice and 50-something Mattie. Her voice for Oren is perfect--childlike and a little odd. Things predictably spiral out of control with more twists, turns, and sudden drops than a roller coaster. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2019]
