Narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds takes a spirited dive into a fantasy that adds some of the elements of online role-playing games (RPG) to the storytelling. An elderly man casts a spell, and a teddy bear comes to life. Threadbare, our hero, is born. But he knows absolutely nothing of the world and must gain experience and attributes to move forward. Reynolds narrates with a sense of the grandeur that grounds the madcap story while still winking at its absurdity. When Threadbare first sees the outdoors, Reynolds, with a lofty tone fit for Tolkien, reads: "Lots of green things, more brown things underneath them, and spiky green things poking out of the ground." Amid the adventure and high jinks, Reynolds also captures the heartwarming bond between Threadbare and his young companion, Celia.
