The author-narrator, a psychoanalyst with a podcast that focuses on politics and relationships, conveys the certitude and altruism often heard from mental health professionals. Safer also sounds intelligent and relaxed, creating a performance that delivers her analysis and recommendations with clarity and grace. The message here is about whether or not to accept in a loved one the politics and politicians you can't tolerate, and many of the vignettes she shares involve the current president, Donald Trump. But the author cleverly avoids judging politicians or their positions, so her advice will not help win arguments. What she does show is how often we unnecessarily instigate and perpetuate such arguments, or fail to put others' political views in the context of their values, the way they live their lives, or their kindness and loyalty toward us.
