Author/narrator Bruce Pascoe's Aussie twang and lilting style give added authenticity to this collection of stories and essays. At first, his gravelly voice is a bit off-putting, but the listener who perseveres will hear fascinating insights on the sparsely populated continent. It is as if the aridity of the land clips his accent to essentials. The stories reveal a nation of contradictions and contrasting narratives. In his fictional works, his manner seems intimate. His essays and letters demonstrate a keen awareness of the injustices and indignities perpetrated upon the aboriginal population. Pascoe, who claims some aboriginal ancestry, is especially persuasive when arguing that the Australian government is complicit in the institutional racism that has ignored indigenous people's history and accomplishments.
