The first in a series of mysteries is narrated by Francis G. Kearney, with believable Canadian intonations. Sergeant Winston Windflower is a full-blooded Cree transplant who has taken a post in the small fishing town of Grand Bank. When a widower's body is discovered, Windflower learns there is much more to the investigation than initially meets the eye. Along with portraying a budding romantic interest and trusty sidekick, Kearney adeptly captures Windflower's slow-paced life in the sleepy coastal village. With a rich, gravelly delivery, Kearney sounds like a neighbor divulging the latest gossip. Despite his limited portrayals of female characters, some stiff dialogue, and a familiar plot, listeners will feel right at home with this easygoing mystery.
