This is a listen for fans of great works of fiction along the lines of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Eskens's novel, as expertly narrated by Kevin Stillwell, is an engaging listen about growing up, friendship, racial injustice, and more. Stillwell does a fantastic job capturing the essence of 15-year-old Boady, who is looking forward to getting out of his small Missouri town. But he knows it won't be easy when the time comes because doing so will mean leaving his widowed mother alone. Adding to this compelling story is an unsolved murder, racial tension, small moments of heroism, and unlikely friendships. To compare any book to Harper Lee's classic is perhaps setting expectations too high, but Stillwell's skill, combined with Eskens's story, makes the comparison appropriate.
