Alan Sklar returns to narrate the 24th book in Jance's J.P. Beaumont series. His deep pitch and avuncular tone are perfect for Beau, the retired homicide detective, now private investigator, who is hired to find a woman who abandoned her newborn daughter. As the story says, "you can't outrun your past," and this proves true for Beau when his investigation turns into a personal quest, revealing surprising relationships. Sklar effectively differentiates some of the secondary male characters but is less successful with the female voices. The slow, deliberate pace of the narration is well matched to the writing. Fans of the series will stick with it to the end just to spend time with these well-developed characters. E.Q. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2020]
