Narrators Philip Stevens and Emma Gregory recount the story of Joan of Arc in the 1430s, along with a contemporary mystery also set in Orleans, France. Stevens portrays Joan with a believable mixture of innocence, piety, and determination suggestive of a seasoned general. Gregory portrays police capitain Inez Picault as resourceful, fast talking, and tough. Listeners witness thrilling battles in which Joan proves she can fight and lead. In the present day, Picault risks her life to solve a terrifying series of fires with political consequences. Most memorable is Stevens's outstanding portrayal of English spy Tomas Rustbeard, who poses as a priest to kill Joan but soon comes to revere and assist her. The contemporary mystery detracts somewhat from the magnificent historical saga. Yet the revelation of a startling secret makes for an unforgettable listen.
