This work of historical fiction involves the topic of McCarthy-era politics. Narrator Ilyana Kadushin is soft-spoken yet fervent in her performance, especially in her attention to dialogue and accents. When Phoebe Adler, an aspiring television writer, is forced to escape the repressive atmosphere in the United States, drama, suspense, and romance ensue. Kadushin's pace can be too fast at times, and some characters fall into caricature. But devoted listeners may love the enthusiasm in the delivery. For those who enjoy a fast-paced thriller, Kadushin is an able guide. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2021]
