Narrator Laurel Lefkow portrays Callie Aspen and her great-aunt, Iphy. The pair are plunged into another murder upon the stabbing of a used book appraiser at the Valentine's Day party catered by their Book Tea Shop. As first one and then another of the pair's friends is accused of the murder, Iphy anxiously jumps into the case, dragging a reluctant Callie with her. The way Callie allows herself to get stuck between Iphy's desire to investigate and the professional investigation of her boyfriend, a deputy, grows tiresome. Lefkow builds intrigue over Iphy's somewhat mysterious past in relation to the party's baritone soloist, Sean Strong. With no discernable regional accents, Lefkow's performance gets the job done but lacks the expression to make it truly stand out. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2020]
