Renata Friedman's crisp narration chronicles the history of cycling and its outstanding women, who range from political heroines to mountain-biking pioneers. Swallowed by time, media inattention, and patriarchal narratives, the extraordinary lives of dozens of women are herein brought to light. Friedman's upbeat tone brightens her broadcaster style of delivery and works well for the author's detail-oriented profiles. However, the overall organization of the book itself is murky; it's sometimes hard to see larger arcs in the subjects placed together, though the author's personal anecdotes ground the stories. Friedman's even delivery combined with the work's lack of focus causes the listening experience to drag on occasion. Nonetheless, cycling fans and those who want to learn more about groundbreaking women will find much to enjoy. S.T.C. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2020]
