This charming examination of the wildlife of the Great Western Catskills in New York generally translates well to audio. The author serves as narrator as she takes listeners on a tour of the area's permanent residents. Her tone is warm and often animated. She offers clear, scientific observations and many notes of beauty and humor. For example, at one point, she describes a blue jay imitating the call of a hawk to scare other birds away from a feeding area, so the jay can dine alone. The only weakness in the narration is the author's sometimes overly long and complex sentences. These leave her catching her breath at awkward points and can make it harder for the listener to grasp her key point. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2020]
