A SINGLE SWALLOW

An ensemble of five gifted narrators splendidly conveys the haunting language and imagery in this WWII story of Ah Yan, a Chinese woman who has a lasting impact upon three men. Feodor Chin's facility with Chinese words and penetrating depiction of Ah Yan's childhood friend, Liu Zhaohu, transport listeners to war-torn China. With a measured pace and gentle tone, Adam Verner portrays Pastor Billy, an American missionary and doctor. His decision to offer medical training to Ah Yan ignites in her a spark of hope when her community disowns her after she is raped by Japanese soldiers. Arthur Morey depicts American gunnery instructor Ian Ferguson with nuance and depth. Christopher Lane and Tanya Eby add a touch of whimsy as a pair of highly observant dogs. M.J.
