EMINENT VICTORIANS

Early in the 20th century, Strachey assembled a select group which he entitled: "Eminent Victorians." These individuals, while not of highest fame, eminently evince many salient attitudes of that sentimentally devious era. Gillies produces them in full dimension. His perfect upper class accent holds all the pomposity of Victoriana. With cool aplomb, he delivers Strachey's acerbic wit and hilariously lethal commentaries. General Gordon, Florence Nightingale, Cardinal Manning and Arnold the schoolmaster step forth exposed in a lush, versatile vocabulary properly articulated. Only in that glorious period of English history could one remark with a certain tone of voice that the Bishop "was very fond of the Holy Ghost." Bravo Gillies for getting it right!
