Narrator Lisa Flanagan's warm voice is perfect for this unsettling fictional exploration of the many manifestations of motherhood. When Evelyn Van Pelt finds her roommate's baby daughter twisting in a tub of cold water, she's had enough. That night she steals away with her roommate's neglected two young daughters. She heads to the snow-filled woods of Cormorant Lake, where she reunites with both her foster mother and her birth mother. Evelyn's guilt for abducting the girls threatens to overwhelm her, and both her mothers are struggling with dark issues of their own. Listeners will appreciate Flanagan's delivery of vivid imagery and her pacing of the story. Her performance also enhances this debut novel by creating well-crafted vocal characterizations.
