Sarah Ladipo Manyika narrates her own novel, an epic story that examines the intricacies of an interracial and intercultural relationship in Nigeria during the tumultuous political upheaval of the mid-twentieth century. In 1963, Tayo Ajayi sets sail from Nigeria to begin studies at Oxford University. His journey heralds great change in his life, most notably in his relationship with Vanessa, a white student whose family was once part of colonial rule in Nigeria. With measured pacing and a polished, melodious tone, Manyika describes the difficulties of Tayo and Vanessa's relationship, which is mirrored by massive political change in Nigeria. Manyika employs subtle character differentiation and authentic pronunciations to great effect, capturing the rhythm and feel of Nigeria and juxtaposing that against the reserve of proper British society.
