SHOW ME A SIGN

Narrator Nora Hunter gives voice to Mary Lambert, a nonverbal Deaf girl who lives in a thriving Deaf community on Martha's Vineyard in 1805. Hunter's clear, confident tone reflects Mary's intelligence and self-esteem as she grows up in a culture in which deafness and sign language communication are common and respected. Surrounded by her protective community, Mary doesn't realize there are people beyond the island who believe that her deafness makes her inferior, or incapable of learning, until an arrogant and ambitious scientist from Boston kidnaps her as a "live specimen." Listeners will be moved by the fear and indignation in Mary's voice when she is abducted to the mainland, where she is helpless, misunderstood, and unable to communicate.
