Narrator Rosalyn Landor treats listeners to a rich, immersive experience in this historical romance in which she subtly uses tone to differentiate complex characters. Hyacinth may have bitten off more than she can chew when she offers to translate an Italian diary. Her skills are amateur at best. But if it means spending more time with the intriguing Gareth, it's a risk she's willing to take to see if the clues to a treasure detailed in the diary will lead to jewels or to a love that can't be bought. Landor serves up a dynamic range of inflections that make each character's dialogue uniquely identifiable. Her quiet but resonant delivery also carries through the narrative, making this a truly delightful listen. A.L. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2021]
