With a subtle twang, narrator Dorothy Dillingham Blue evokes the hills of Tennessee, where Maybell Parish has inherited her great-aunt's rundown mansion and its groundskeeper, Wesley Koehler. Blue's accent becomes more pronounced as she portrays secondary characters, such as an annoying former co-worker of Maybell's. Wesley is quite taciturn and speaks in clipped tones. Maybell believes that Wesley is a grouch, but the listener warms towards him when it is revealed that he suffers from extreme social anxiety. Maybell tends to daydream, and the wispy quality Blue gives her voice allows the listener to drift into her dreams along with her. S.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2021]
