Five of Harper Audio's six historic recordings of Ernest Hemingway reading his own works come from the files of writer A.E. Hotchner. They are important for their rarity, and the publisher has cleaned up and remastered the wire originals with digital equipment. (Only the last selection, “Saturday Night at the Whorehouse in Billings, Montana,” remains occasionally indecipherable.) The selections include the Nobel Prize acceptance speech (from the archives of a Havana radio station), “Second Poem to Mary,” and three recollections about his writing. The second of these colorfully recounts the writing of his play THE FIFTH COLUMN during the Spanish Civil War. G.H. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: APR/MAY 00]
