Susan Dalian puts her versatility to use in this legal thriller. She brings listeners the cadence and rhythms of African American culture through attorney Ellice Littlejohn, a rising star in a firm where all is not what it seems. Dalian establishes well-defined characters ranging from Ellice herself to Vera, a motherly figure who cares for Ellice's younger brother, and the various members of the white corporate world Ellice has become part of. Dalian straddles the playful and the serious--from Ellice's lighthearted affair with her boss to her discovery of his body in his bed. As an investigation ensues and Ellice benefits from her boss's death, even she can see something is not quite right. Fans of crime fiction will find much to admire in this mystery.
