Listening to this audiobook is a unique experience, and narrator William DeMeritt does his best to engage listeners. The premise is fascinating: A young man named Ham who has been displaced by Hurricane Katrina is on a journey to find where he comes from and where he belongs. Around his neck he wears a pendant that includes a bone fragment belonging to St. Martin de Porres, who serves as the occasional narrator of Ham's journey. DeMeritt's narration captures the dreamy, spiritual tone of the story, and the disjointed feel of his delivery reflects the fragmented plot. However, it is difficult to know when Ham is telling his own story and when the spirit is sharing what is happening. K.S.M. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2022]
