Thom Rivera's narration is a subtle technical achievement. He deftly handles the main character's dual roles as a small-town sheriff and Catholic priest. Crooked Creek, Indiana, is the kind of place where everyone's a neighbor, but not everyone's friendly. Sheriff Lancaster straddles a difficult line: He must maintain the confidentiality of people's confessions, yet that confidentiality could be compromised in police investigations. When several murders take place in quick succession, the FBI pressures Lancaster to break those confidences. Scott's audiobook takes precipitous turns, making for a compelling listening experience. Rivera's performance is skilled as he captures the complexity of Lancaster's choices. S.P.C. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2022]
